A Legacy For Luke

Glen Snyder presents a wonderful rendition of the life of the small boy, Luke, living through the Great Depression in Southwest Missouri.  It covers Prohibition, lead and zinc mining, explosive manufacturing, the plague of tuberculosis, labor unions, and social issues of the time alluding to such notables as Henry Ford, Charles Lindbergh, Herbert Hoover, Franklin Roosevelt, and George Patton.  Although nostalgic glimpses permeate his story, one cannot help but identify with young Luke's quest for acceptance among family and peers; his embarrassment in school and elsewhere; his impoverished condition and yearning for parents whom he sees rarely, and a yearning that follows him through life.

In "A Legacy for Luke," Glen Snyder has captured in potent prose a special segment of American history with all its grass roots reality and presenved it for posterity.  It is marked by laughter and pain immersed in the shadows of the Great Depression and glows with the triumph of a special family.  His words open a window upon a moment in time that forever flavors the American experience with elemental dignity and grace.

Glen Snyder gives us a unique opportunity to view the depression years in Southwest Missouri through the eyes of young Luke Shrader.  His ability to detail the problems facing the Shrader family in their struggle for survival gives the reader new insight on how rural Missourians coped during this era.
